The Holocaust stands alone in the sense that it is the only moment in all of human history when an entire people throughout the world has been targeted for complete and total annihilation. These podcasts take a fresh look at this uniquely horrible genocide, with a view to understanding, not just the dismal facts of what happened, but why these things happened, in a modern and supposedly enlightened society in the heart of continental Europe. There are no final answers in our quest to understand, but we can all learn at the very least to ask the right questions. Was genocidal fascism unique to Germany, or could it have risen anywhere under the “right” set of circumstances? Once Hitler rose to power, was the Holocaust inevitable, or did it “evolve” over time? Could something like the Holocaust happen again? These questions and many more are examined in this cutting-edge podcast series.
